English 830: Teaching Writing — Think Aloud Writing Protocol Procedure

Directions for Researchers

During this task, your job as a researcher is to try to record everything you notice about what the writer is saying and doing as they compose. Your goal is to gain as much insight into the writer’s writing process as you can.

Directions for the Writer

During this task, your goal is to try to verbalize all the thoughts that come to you as you work to write. This is meant to be a short writing task. There are no right or wrong answers. Just write to answer this prompt as best you can.

Please note that when people do this task, they often forget to keep talking. We are not used to verbalizing our thoughts out loud, of course, so this can feel unnatural. Just try to do the best you can. Please speak  aloud to the best of your ability all your thoughts about how you are performing this writing task.

Writing Prompt

Provide as much detail as you can in order to describe this writing experience you had working on a very important piece of writing.
