- On p. 58 Vladek shoots a German soldier. Then, on p. 50, after learning that he had indeed killed the soldier, he says “Well, at least I did something.” What’s your reaction to this statement?
- Would you call Vladek a hero? Why?
- Why does Spiegelman title Maus Book I “My father bleeds history?”
- Do you think Vladek Spiegelman’s story is true? Why? Does it matter?
- X-men Iopens in 1944 Poland where we learn that the mutant Magneto was Jewish. In X-Men III, Magneto shows the number the Nazi’s tattooed on his arm and says, no one will ever touch my skin with a needle again. What’s your reaction to having this fictional superhero story tied to such real world atrocities?
- Presumably one of the reasons Magneto grows to hate humans is what the Nazi’s did to him. Likewise, Mala, Vladek’s wife, criticizes Vladek as being miserly and Artie worries he’s caricaturing his father through his story (pp. 130-132). Does suffering through atrocity excuse or even justify the later behavior of survivors?
