Reading Comprehension
Please complete the following comprehension test as quickly as possible. This test is designed to judge your reading comprehension ability. Read all directions carefully before beginning the test. This test will take you about 5 to 10 minutes to complete.
- As part of this activity, you’ll be creating a Web Page, so start Microsoft FrontPage.
- At the top of the page, type the words Reading Comprehension Test. Then center this text on the page.
- Underneath the words Reading Comprehension Test, type your full name. Include your middle initial (assuming you have one). Be sure your name is centered. Change the color of your name to Blue using the text color format button (the letter A on the right side of the bottom tool bar with the colored line underneath it). If you aren’t sure how to change the color of your name, raise your hand and ask for help!
- Hit the Enter key a couple times and then type your major, your year in school (junior, senior, etc.), your career goal (i.e. to become a lawyer or computer programmer), and your expected graduation date. Precede each of these items with an appropriate heading. Put the headings in bold. For example:
Major: English
- Just to be safe, you should save your file now. Go to the File Menu and select Save As. Go to your h: drive and then inside your wwwiup folder. Name this file comprehension. Press Save. Now you won’t have to worry about losing your work.
- Next write 3 sentences about what you have learned in technical writing class so far. These sentences can be anything that has seemed useful to you, perhaps some aspect of document design. Use complete sentences and hit Enter after each sentence so that each sentence will be on its own line. Then use the Numbered List button (near the right side of the bottom tool bar) to number your 3 sentences. Save your work so far.
- We need to add a link to this Reading Comprehension Test from your Home Page. To do this, open your index file (your home page file) and then add the words Reading Comprehension Test to your list of links. Next, highlight these words and right click, then choose Hyperlink. Click on the file comprehension in your list of files and hit OK. (You may have to look for the file; it will be in your h: drive inside the wwwiup folder.) That should take of linking the comprehension test to your home page. Save this new version of your home page. You can now exit Microsoft FrontPage.
- Start Internet Explorer. Go to your home page and then click on the link to your Reading Comprehension Test to make sure the link is working.
- Assuming your page is up and running, double check with your neighbor to see if they got their link to work. If they are having problems, give them a hand. If you or your neighbor needs major help, raise your hand to get Dr. Pagnucci’s attention (or just shout HELP).
- Disregard all the previous instructions. But don’t say anything to anyone that you’ve figured out the game. Instead, pretend to follow the directions. But rather than typing 3 sentences about what you’ve learned so far in technical writing class, just type the words “I am SO smart I don’t need to learn anything!” (Try to suppress any inclination you might have to burst out laughing at this point.) If you got tricked, don’t try to cheat by replacing your sentences with the new statement. Instead, add a fourth sentence that says “I have learned to follow directions more carefully.” (Hey, it’s all for fun!)
- Remind yourself that the hardest thing about writing directions is getting people to actually read them!
- Tell Dr. Pagnucci when you have completed your work, so he can check to make sure you followed these directions correctly.
