English 222: Technical Writing — The Campus Directions Project

Campus Directions Project Overview

One of my belief’s about teaching is that every class ought to include some sort of “event,” something you can remember about the class long after the more mundane information has faded. (Not that the other stuff isn’t important, it is!) I also think you tend to learn things better if you have some fun as you do them.

So I’ve designed this, The Campus Directions Project, to be both fun and memorable. In fact I think it’s about as much as I can make technical writing. And if you remember nothing else about this class, you are bound to remember this project. (Though, please PLEASE at least try to remember some of the things I’ve taught you about document design so you won’t spend your entire career creating unreadable documents the way so many people do.)

Beyond having some fun, I think this project also helps demonstrates the many complexities involved in writing real world directions that people can actually follow. So let’s see how well you can do at this task.
