The Link Between Technical and Business Writing
Technical Writing is always connected to business writing. Thus it is not enough just to help readers understand a message, that message is also generally part of an entrepreneurial venture. That’s why to be a good technical writer, you not only have to be able to write clearly, but you also have to be able to write a little ad copy. To work on the business side of technical writing, I’d like you to create a brand new dot com writing business (and yes, it probably will be a here today, gone tomorrow business, but that’s how life on the web is).
The Newest .com Writing Company
Please do the following work in collaboration with your other department members.
- As a group, brainstorm an interesting name for your .com writing business.
- Create a web page for your business which contains the following:
- company name
- company logo
- company slogan
- list of all company departments (you’ll need to link to all departments in the class)
- link to company CEO Dr. Pagnucci’s web page (https://pagnucci.org/)
- list of all employees and their emails (you’ll need to check with all class members to get this information
- types of services provided (this should be a company that does technical writing, among other things)
- sample products (including our class project–the IUP Student Survival Guide)
- current client list
- include your names on the page as web designers
- Have a little fun with this assignment. I could give you a worksheet from a technical writing text book, but I’m hoping this assignment will help you not only practice your technical writing skills but also tap into your creativity.
- The best web site will be used for the class project and the designers will get prizes.
