The Power of Writing and Teaching
We’ve talked a lot about the importance of writing and good teaching during this semester. As a narrative scholar, I believe that writing helps us to remember experiences that matter and it also helps us to understand those experiences. While there are many pedagogical theories one can work from as a composition teacher, I don’t want you to lose sight of the power writing has to change a person’s life forever.
And, as a teacher, you have power, too. Good teachers also can change students’ lives forever. So, when you teach, share who you are and what you love. And enjoy all those students who will come through your classes. We get each student for such a short time. Worry less about grading what students do and more about hearing what students say. Listen as much as you talk (that’s something I REALLY have to work on, I know! 🙂 Have fun. Enjoy the chance to learn. It’s one of the best ways we can spend our time.
A Little COMIC Book Pedagogy
We haven’t got a lot of time for COMIC Book Pedagogy, but I thought I would throw in just a little of my own teaching philosophy to end our course.
Teaching is a great honor. I hope you will teach your students how to write better. And I hope you will teach them that we can all make a difference in the world by helping others and being kind and standing up for what’s right. Teach your students that they can change the world one person at a time…
