English 830: Teaching Composition Course Requirement — Course Tasks

Course Tasks

This course focuses heavily on the practical aspects of teaching. It views teaching as a creative art in which teachers must envision, design, and create interesting documents that bring a course to life. It takes time and care to build good courses, but so often as teachers we are in a rush when we are doing this creating. So, for this course, I will be giving you time thoughtfully create course materials that you can use in your future teaching. You might be creating new documents from scratch or redesigning and improving documents you have created in the past. Both new creation and re-creation/re-vision are important creative acts.

We will talk about all of these documents in class, look at samples of each others work as well as other people’s materials. This will be collaborative community work to help you create the best course documents you can. We will also look at principles for creating high quality course materials.

You will get credit for completing each task. Dr. Pagnucci will not give you written comments on these documents since these are not papers in the traditional sense. Instead, everyone will get feedback on the course documents in class. Dr. Pagnucci will also meet with you during class and in an individual conference to talk about the materials and how to enhance your materials.

Ultimately, you own these documents and must make them work for you. All the other feedback is meant to help draw out your own creativity as a teacher. But with course materials, there is no right or wrong design, there is just what works best for you in meeting the needs of your students.
