Unit 3 Required Materials
Due Week 4 (Sep. 16): Required Readings and Materials on Managing Time, Stress, & Your Life
- Video: Google TechTalk by Inbox Zero Founder Merlin Mann (58:41)
- This video is about an hour long, but it is exceptionally good, even the very end where Merlin starts doing Q&A (in fact, that Q&A actually includes one of the most important points of the whole video, so you don’t want to quit too soon)
- Even if you know about Inbox Zero or have seen the video before, it’s really worth watching it again; I try to watch it every year or two because it helps inspire me to try to get back on track with my email
- I hope you’ll enjoy it

Unit 3 Class Activities
Part 1. Lecture (10 minutes)
- Project Overload

- Article: “Information Overload Is Crushing You: Here Are 11 Secrets That Will Help” by Andrew McDermott (2017, Oct. 30)
- “There’s a silent epidemic sweeping through your organization. It’s spread from one person to another. This infection is dangerous, not because it can’t be cured, but because most of the time we’re powerless to stop it. I’m talking about information overload.
- When most people hear the words ‘infection’ and ‘information overload’ together they usually discount the information. They approach information overload like it’s a benign problem.
- As if it’s an easy fix.
- Every day, information overload threatens to ruin your career.
- Miss a critical piece of information and your organization could be hurt or affected negatively. Fail to share the information your co-workers need and your entire team may suffer. Fail to keep up with the demand and you may miss something critical.
- We’re drowning in information.”
- A study of managers from the United States, England, Hong Kong, Singapore, and Australia, revealed many problematic health impacts of information overload:
- “33 percent felt they were suffering from poor health due to information overload.
- 66 percent reported tension with their co-workers and management as well as reduced job satisfaction.
- 62 percent admitted their social and professional relationships were suffering”
