We are all called to serve others. Even if you don’t believe in a particular religion, the drive to do good and serve others is one of the most fundamental aspects of being human. The call to serve others is also an important aspect of most of the major religions of the world.
Jesus Calls His First Disciples
One important example of this call can be seen in the Bible:
Matthew 4:18-22 New International Version (NIV)
18 As Jesus was walking beside the Sea of Galilee, he saw two brothers, Simon called Peter and his brother Andrew. They were casting a net into the lake, for they were fishermen. 19 “Come, follow me,” Jesus said, “and I will send you out to fish for people.” 20 At once they left their nets and followed him.
21 Going on from there, he saw two other brothers, James son of Zebedee and his brother John. They were in a boat with their father Zebedee, preparing their nets. Jesus called them, 22 and immediately they left the boat and their father and followed him.
Heroes Are Often Called
Jesus called together his disciples, and they followed him. This motif of people being called on a mission is repeated many times in literature and film. For instance, at the end of the movie Iron Man, S.H.I.E.L.D. Director Nick Fury sneaks into Tony Stark’s house and says that he needs Iron Man to join the Avengers.
Your Own Calling
As you grow, it is very important for you to think about what you will do with your life and how you are called to do good in the world. This is one of the most important responsibilities we have as human beings.
