Your Teaching Pedagogy Statement
Write a Teaching Pedagogy Statement (also sometimes called a Teaching Philosophy Statement) which summarizes your views about teaching:
- You can write a Teaching Pedagogical Statement that is tailored to teaching composition, but if it is more useful for you to make your statement more general (for example, teaching English generally) or give it a different focus (for example, teaching applied linguistics), you are welcome to do so
- I’m sure many of you already have a good Teaching Pedagogy Statement; this will be your chance to reread and revise that statement with a fresh eye
- Your Teaching Pedagogy Statement needs to be one you are willing, and able, to defend
- While there are many ways to approach this task, people often try to answer, as best they can, these questions in there Teaching Pedagogy Statement:
- Why am I teacher?
- Why does teaching matter to me?
- What are my central goals/objectives as a teacher?
- Why do I have the pedagogical goals/objectives that I do?
- Where do my pedagogical goals/objectives come from?
- On whose theories, philosophies, and research are my pedagogical goals based?
- What methods do I employ with my students to achieve these goals?
- What sorts of assignments do I use to achieve these goals?
- How do I assess/evaluate my success in achieving my goals for my students?
- This is YOUR Teaching Pedagogy Statement, so write what you believe; your pedagogical statement does not have to match what Dr. Pagnucci would write (in fact, it should not if it’s going to be your true authentic voice!)
- This is a standard document required on the job market
- Your Teaching Pedagogy Statement should reference the names of 2-3 key scholars with whom you are aligned, but you do not need to include a works cited for this document
- Your Teaching Pedagogy Statement should be 1 page in length
- Your Teaching Pedagogy Statement should be in a 12 point font, single-spaced
- Please use paragraph breaks or, even better, headings for your key ideas
