IUP Distinguished Award Winners

I’ve been working with Ken Sherwood on a simple plan to collect Career Award and Book Publication Information. In the meantime, I discovered (without her telling me!), that I left Chauna’s name off the list of IUP major faculty award winners. I look forward to getting a complete list for bragging rights on our website.

Agenda Items

1. IUP Fall 2020

  • IUP Fall Rebalance
  • Goal: Fewer students on campus
  • Primarily new first year (freshmen) students
  • Non-first year students will take classes remotely or Distance Education
  • Students in Indiana can attend in person if space is available for them to attend safely
  • All campus services will be available to all students
  • The IUP library should finally reopen for book checkout (though information is still pending)
  • Room changes are still be worked on by the Office of the Registrar
  • Gian is still making adjustments to the Fall 2020 schedule to address Flexible Work Assignment (FWA) requests
  • Instructional Modes of Delivery:
    • Face-to-face
    • Hybrid (face-to-face/zoom/asynchronous mix)
    • Remote (use of class time slot but delivered from home/some asynchronous ok)
    • Distance Education (asynchronous)

2. Building Access

  • You may enter the building whenever you need to
  • Please email Dawnette if you plan to go to the building
  • Only 20 English faculty can be in the building at the same time, so Dawnette will cut things off if we reach that number (which is unlikely)
  • Starting on Aug. 24 (first day of IUP classes), the building restrictions end
  • Please remove non-paper trash when you go; it is unclear how often trash will be picked up for us
  • Maintenance has experienced $800,000 worth of cuts, so fewer work orders will get done this year

3. Mail

  • Due to cuts in post office personnel, there will no longer be campus mail delivery or pickup
  • Dawnette, Peggy, and Nikki will share getting the mail, roughly 3 times per week
  • If you have a rush order mail item, please alert Dawnette

3. IUP English Fall 2020 Plans

Fall 2020 English Department Meetings

  • All meetings will be held via Zoom
  • The meetings are already schedule on the IUP English Google Calendar
  • Recordings of all meetings will be posted and are stored by Zoom for 120 days

Office Availability

  • Online Office Hours (5 synchronous hours of availability; additional time to meet with students having issues
  • Email availability for all students including both D2L email AND IUP email
  • Main English Office Available by email, phone, and/or zoom
  • Dawnette will be in Monday and Thursday all day; she will work remotely on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Friday
  • Peggy’s schedule is still being finalized; for now she will be in each day
  • English Chair and English Assistant Chair available by by email, phone, and/or zoom

Personal Health Issues

  • Human Resources will be sending out information on how to request an all online teaching assignment for health reasons
  • Faculty must submit an IWiki curriculum proposal for converting any courses to Distance Education (DE) delivery; there are 9 simple questions to answer
  • Faculty must use the original student learning outcomes; if you want to update SLO’s, then do a separate curriculum proposal which will be approved in the fall
  • Dean Asamoah must approve any changes to course deliver mode since the courses have already been scheduled for face-to-face or online delivery and contain enrolled students

5. New English Major Welcome Meeting

  • August 20 from 11 a.m.-12 p.m.
  • HSS 125 and Zoom
  • We need people to greet our new students

6. English and English Educaiton Advising

  • We have increased students coming into English
  • This is great news!
  • We have about 60 English Education Majors and 46 English Majors for about 106 total majors
  • Anyone teaching in the English B.A. Program or English Ed. B.S. Program will be asked to advise 5-10 majors
  • You may be asked to advise English Education majors
  • Gian will email you with a list of new advisees soon
  • Emily Wender and Dan Weinstein will provide some advising orientation information if you need it
  • Good advising ensures full majors courses
  • Gian is advising English Education majors since there are no international students this year (who he normally advises)
  • Thanks to Gloria Park and Mike Williamson who volunteer to advise even though they almost never teach English B.A./English Education B.S. courses

7. What You Can Do

  • You can control your class: Prepare to teach great classes using the HawkFlex approach
  • Take care of yourself: Practice social distancing, enjoy the summer, eat right, exercise, and get plenty of sleep

  • Please remember to email Dawnette to get all English Department events and key meetings added to the department web calendar
  • Please check the calendar before scheduling meetings to help limit conflicts
  • TR from 2:00-4:00 p.m. is a common open time for tenure track faculty members to use for meetings
