Approval of Minutes

We will vote to approve Minutes from the English Department meeting held on:

  • 8/25/17

The minutes were circulated by email and will be shown at the meeting using the classroom instructor projection station. A limited set of copies will be printed, but please bring your own copy or review the minutes ahead of time so we can limit paper usage and printing costs. Thanks.

Agenda Items

  1. Classroom Safety
  • IUP Campus Police: 724-357-2141
  • If a student is disrupting class, call campus police
  • Do not hesitate to dismiss a class to keep your students safe
  • Bring your cell phone to class
  • Put the campus police number in your favorites
  • After an incident is resolved, report it to CART and let Gian know
  • Feel free to call the office for help if you need it
  • You never know when a situation can escalate out of control
  • It is much, much better to call campus police even if they end up not being needed than to not have them there when they are needed
  1. Classroom Resets
  • Please have students put chairs back into rows at the end of each class session
  • A diagram for the correct room setup should be posted in each classroom
  • The dean has received complaints about classrooms not being reset
  • We don’t want to lose access to the classrooms we have, so please do your best to reset the classroom after you teach
  • Please do NOT move tables or chairs in and out of classrooms
  1. Funding for EXPOs
  • EXPOs are typically for several hours on a Saturday morning
  • To support an English presence at this event, Gian provides $150 in extra travel money to faculty who attend
  • Options for selecting representatives will be discussed by Todd Thompson

4. English 121: Humanities Literature Update

  • The Department of Foreign Languages is reviewing our ENGL 121 proposal

5. Summer School Rotation Policy Overview

  • Explanation of how the summer school rotation works (Ben Rafoth, Summer School Committee Chair)

6. Title IX Training

  • Be sure to complete your Title IX Training by Sep. 28
  1. Spring Schedule
  • The spring schedule is in the system
  • We ran 18 majors courses in Fall 17
  • The original B.A. plan aimed for about 24 majors courses
  • Gian cut the Spring 18 number to 18 majors courses to avoid having classes get canceled
  • Courses were cut from the plan based on faculty having more than one course to teach; primary courses for each person were kept
  • Gian and Heather went over the plan and made a few more changes to make sure we were covering everything we needed to

Announcements

APSCUF Membership

It is very important for all tenure track and temporary faculty to join the union. The cost is minimal as all faculty already pay roughly 90% of the membership due. But a strong union helps protect both temporary and permanent faculty. If you are not a member, please join as soon as possible.

In addition, please consider joining APSCUF CAP which does lobbying for the union. This is the best way to influence legislators to support our concerns.

IUP English Google Calendar

  • Please remember to email Dawnette to get all English Department events and key meetings added to the department web calendar
  • Please check the calendar before scheduling meetings to help limit conflicts
  • TR from 2:00-4:00 p.m. is a common open time for tenure track faculty members to use for meetings
