English 222: Technical Writing — Directions for Adding Your Email Link to Your Web Pages

For Use with Netscape Composer

Adding email links to your web page is almost the same process as adding a hyperlink. Again, it’s quite easy! Just follow the steps below:

  1. Type out your full email address. For example:

xxxx@iup.edu

  1. Press Enter (this step saves some hassles later)
  2. Highlight the email address you just typed.
  3. Click on the Link button. It looks like a piece of white metal chain. (Alternatively, you can select Link from the Insert menu.)
  4. In the Link to: area type mailto: followed immediately by your email address. Do NOT use any spaces. Lower case is usually best. The link you are typing should look like the example below except with your own personal email address:

mailto:xxx@iup.edu

  1. Click OK.
  2. Your email address should now be underlined and it’s color should have changed to match one of your link colors.

Now when people click on your email address, their email program will automatically start and a message to your address will be automatically opened.

If you have more than one email address, you can add the others by repeating the above steps.

Note: Your link won’t work until you view it on the Internet. Right now you are still just in your web page editor. To view your new link, save your file and then go to your web page (http://www.people.iup.edu/xxxx where xxxx is your IUP username).
