English 222: Technical Writing — Directions for Changing Web Page Colors

For Use with Netscape Composer

  1. Click on the Format menu.
  2. Select Page Colors and Properties.
  3. On the General tab, enter the following:
    • Title–Enter a title that suits your page. I might use Gian’s Italian Villa, for example.
    • Author–Enter your first and last name here. You might also want to include your middle initial or middle name (if you don’t mind people knowing it). The author information for a page helps people find your page if they type your name into a search engine like YAHOO.
  4. On the Colors and Backgrounds tab, you can change the items below. Be sure to select colors that contrast well with each other. Also, avoid colors that are hard to read. For instance, a black background might sound cool, but it gets very tiring to look at an all black screen.
    • Normal Text–Your text starts out black, but you can change all your text to any color you like.
    • Link Text–Your link text starts out blue. This is the color of your links before a person clicks on them.
    • Active Link Text–Your active link text starts out blue. This is an action/dynamic link color. This is the color of your links while the person is clicking on them. This color is only on the screen for a moment. It changes very quickly into:
    • Followed Link Text–Your followed link text starts out purple. This is the color of your links after a person clicks on them. Changing this color helps people remember which of your links they’ve already visited.
    • Background–Your background color starts out white. You can change it to any color you like. You can also use an image for your background, but that’s a more advanced technique to try on a later day.
  5. Click OK when you have everything set up the way you want.
  6. Feel free to experiment. You can always change things back later. It might take you a few tries to select colors that you like.
