To help everyone improve both their overall class project web site and their individual articles, I’d like you to do some very careful and complete review work. For each person whose article you read, whether in our own class or at another university, please provide concrete and specific feedback so that the person will know how to improve their writing. Remember, the other person’s grade can be greatly improved if you help them fix a problem area before their article is graded. These other students are depending on your assistance, so give them the best, most conscientious help you can. If you read their work with great care, they will hopefully read your work with the same level of commitment.
For all ratings below, use a 1-10 scale with 10 being the best/highest. Also, remember that a rating of 6 is not nearly as helpful as a rating of 6 with a good explanation of what the problems in the area were. It is the explanation which the writer will use to make revisions.

Individual Articles
Answer the following questions for 4 articles (1 from your group and 3 from the 3 other groups–include the Financial Group in with the Academic Group.)
- What is the article title?
- What section is the article in?
- Who is the author?
- What is the purpose of the article? Can you tell the purpose of the article in the first paragaraph?
- How could the introduction to the article be improved?
- How complete is the article? What other items should be discussed?
- Suggest at least 2 sub-headings which the author could include to make the article more efficient to read. What material, if any, should be added to complete these new sub-sections?
- What terms in the article might need defining?
- Discuss the format of the article. How effective is the author’s format?
- Rate this article on a scale of 1-10 for how useful it would be for a new IUP student.
- Rate the readability of this article on a scale of 1-10 where 10 is the most readable and best.
Invitation for Feedback from the Person You Just Critiqued
Turn about is fair play, so now it is your turn. Hopefully you’ve just done a great and thorough job reviewing someone else’s article. Now ask that person to return the favor. If you’ve worked hard to do a good review, you can ask the person you reviewed to do the same to help you.
Finish your critique by including the following information:
- your name
- your email address
- an invitation to the person to now read and critique your own article (be persuasive with your invitation, not demanding)
- a link to the web address for your article
- you might also want to say how much time you spent reading the other person’s article and writing the critique, especially if you are hoping to have them put in the same amount of time and effort on your article
Remember: If you do a hasty or incomplete critique, you aren’t likely to get a good critique in return. So help yourself by doing your best to help the students you are critiquing.
