Welcome to Professor Xavier’s School for the Gifted!
Congratulations. Your various good deeds and the computer Cerebro have helped identify you as a student worthy of admission to Xavier’s School for Gifted Mutants. But admission to this elite school is only beginning. Now your training will begin. You must prove you are worthy to wear the mantle (and tights) of a hero!
Course Goals
This course is designed to help students explore the literary aesthetics of comic books. We will discuss how comic books are both read and created. We’ll also study some of the genre’s greatest works. Hopefully the course will expand your skills at:
- reading and analyzing literature
- writing about comic books
- discussing alternative literary forms and genres
- fighting crime
Course Expectations
IUP has never offered a course like this before. In fact, I had to defeat a lot of supervillains to even get this section on the books. So I want this to be a great, and FUN, learning experience for you.
But I can’t defeat the forces of evil without your help. Fortunately, you possess the super powers necessary to triumph this semester: the abilities to read, think, and talk. I want you to try your best to engage with all the potential these fabulous texts have to illuminate the world around us. I need your commitment, though, to make that happen or, to put it another way, with great power comes great responsibility: This can be a SUPER class if you help me make it that way!
If you want to do well in this course, I expect you to:
- work hard
- read everything assigned
- talk a LOT
- do all the work assigned
- attend class every day
- try your best
- work well with others
- keep an open mind
- be courteous
- treat the course material as useful
- learn as much as you can
Students who meet all these very basic expectations will do well in this course.
Cautionary Note
All fun language aside, this is a three-credit IUP English course and students must meet all the IUP rules and regulations that apply to taking any IUP course.
