English 833: Theories of Composition — Poetry Writing

I. The Object

  • Walk until you find an object that speaks to you
  • Describe the object in as much detail as you can

II. The Landscape

  • Return to the object
  • Look at the object with new eyes
  • Describe the setting the object is in
  • Use your senses to describe how you feel about the object

III. The Story

  • Tell a story that goes with the object
  • You might have to make the story up

IV. The Self

  • Write about where you are in this moment in time (physically, mentally, emotionally, spiritually)
  • Write about where you are going

Finding Your Poem

  • Go through all 4 parts and circle the words and phrases that stand out to you

Writing Your Poem

  • Trim away everything that doesn’t matter and finish with a 4 stanza poem (parts I-IV)
