A Time to Support Students
While I like to share positive, “cool” news on my website, this has been a very hard time. IUP experienced a shooting during a Homecoming party and the Israeli/Hamas conflict continues to worsen with so much loss of life.
Provide Students with Opportunities to Reflect
As a narrative scholar, I believe stories have the power to help us heal and make meaning of tragedy. It’s not simple or easy work, but story telling and writing is one important key to helping us move forward through extreme challenges. I know right now teachers everywhere are struggling to help students who have been impacted by tragedies, especially those with close ties to the conflict in Israel and the Gaza Strip. So I want to encourage teachers to give students time to write, reflect, and talk about all the troubling things going on in the world around them. This does not mean a teacher has to be a counselor. They just need to be a supportive listener. A few words of acknowledgment and support from a teacher can mean so much to students.
At IUP, we also have support a number of important resources for students. Below is information on some of those services:
- IUP Rhonda H. Luckey Center for Health and Well-Being
- The Health Center offers an Open Support Group on Tuesdays at 4 p.m. (G-18 Suites on Maple East)
- IUP Care Team
- If you know of a student who is struggling and needs support, please alert the Care Team by filing a quick report:
- The College of Arts and Humanities Care Team Member is David Ferguson

Roots is a grassroots movement to build understanding and nonviolent transformation among Israelis and Palestinians. It offers a direct counterpoint to the violence now exploding in the Gaza Strip region.
- Video: The Roots Message of Understanding and Transformation
- This brief video on the Roots homepage provides a powerful message from Rabbi Hanan Schlesinger, Roots Director of International Relations
- I found Rabbi Schlesinger’s speech highly moving
- The rabbi talks about about how important it is for people to share their stories so they can achieve understanding and mutual respect
- I highly encourage you to watch the short speech: It is well worth a few minutes of your time
